Robert De Niro may next fill in the role of convicted Ponzi scheme felon Bernard L. Madoff.
According to The New York Times, HBO confirmed that De Niro has made a commitment to portray the perpetrator of the largest financial fraud in U.S. history in a made-for-TV film currently under development.
The cable channel, however, warned that it still is in the pre-production stage.
De Niro, along with Jane Rosenthal, also is an executive producer of the ongoing project under the actor’s own Tribeca Productions company.
The film draws some inspiration from the book, The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, written by The New York Times’ Diana B. Henriques.
Reservation Road’s John Burnham Schwartz will be writing the screenplay.
As added reference, the producers received legal rights to use Truth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family by Laurie Sandell, which was written with the help of the main character’s son, Andrew Madoff.
